The idea that a single blood test can \u00abdetect cancer early\u00bb is appealing. However, modern medicine looks at this issue much deeper.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"345\" data-end=\"683\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medilab.km.ua\/en\/cancer-screening-early-detection-and-cancer-treatment\/\">Screening<\/a> \u2014 it\u2019s not just testing. It\u2019s a system for early detection of disease in people without symptoms. For a test to be suitable for mass screening, it must be as accurate as possible, have a low percentage of false-positive results, and actually reduce mortality from the disease. Most tumor markers do not meet these criteria.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"685\" data-end=\"761\">Why the idea of a &quot;blood test for cancer&quot; seems logical, but doesn&#039;t always work<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"763\" data-end=\"949\">Tumor markers are substances that can be produced by tumor cells or tissues in the body in response to a pathological process. However, they are not unique to malignant tumors.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"951\" data-end=\"979\">Their level may increase with:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"1151\">\n<li data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"1004\">\n<p data-start=\"982\" data-end=\"1004\">chronic inflammation<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1005\" data-end=\"1036\">\n<p data-start=\"1007\" data-end=\"1036\">benign neoplasms<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1050\">\n<p data-start=\"1039\" data-end=\"1050\">infections<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1051\" data-end=\"1074\">\n<p data-start=\"1053\" data-end=\"1074\">hormonal changes<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1075\" data-end=\"1099\">\n<p data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1099\">age-related characteristics<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1100\" data-end=\"1151\">\n<p data-start=\"1102\" data-end=\"1151\">the influence of smoking or other lifestyle factors<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1153\" data-end=\"1227\">That is why a result above the norm does not automatically mean an oncological process.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1229\" data-end=\"1408\">According to recommendations <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/span>, effective screening should be based on methods with proven benefits for the population, not just on laboratory indicators.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1410\" data-end=\"1452\">Main problem: low specificity<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1454\" data-end=\"1575\">For screening, it is important that the test clearly distinguishes patients from healthy individuals. Most tumor markers have limited specificity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1577\" data-end=\"1588\">This means:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1589\" data-end=\"1706\">\n<li data-start=\"1589\" data-end=\"1626\">\n<p data-start=\"1591\" data-end=\"1626\">possible false positive results<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1647\">\n<p data-start=\"1629\" data-end=\"1647\">unnecessary examinations<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1648\" data-end=\"1682\">\n<p data-start=\"1650\" data-end=\"1682\">unnecessary invasive procedures<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"1683\" data-end=\"1706\">\n<p data-start=\"1685\" data-end=\"1706\">psychological stress<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"1708\" data-end=\"1876\">Specialists <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Mayo Clinic<\/span><\/span> emphasize that tumor markers are much more effective for monitoring an already established diagnosis than for the initial search for a tumor.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1878\" data-end=\"1948\">When tumor markers can still be part of a screening strategy<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1950\" data-end=\"2080\">There are situations where cancer marker testing is used in narrow risk groups. Tumor markers can complement them in certain clinical situations, but not replace them.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3726\" data-end=\"3783\">Who should discuss cancer marker testing with a doctor?<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3785\" data-end=\"3813\">Consultation is advisable if:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"3814\" data-end=\"3973\">\n<li data-start=\"3814\" data-end=\"3861\">\n<p data-start=\"3816\" data-end=\"3861\">there is a family history of cancer<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3862\" data-end=\"3896\">\n<p data-start=\"3864\" data-end=\"3896\">there are warning symptoms<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3897\" data-end=\"3933\">\n<p data-start=\"3899\" data-end=\"3933\">the patient belongs to a risk group<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li data-start=\"3934\" data-end=\"3973\">\n<p data-start=\"3936\" data-end=\"3973\">necessary follow-up after treatment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-start=\"3975\" data-end=\"4053\">In such cases, tumor markers become part of a well-thought-out diagnostic plan.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4055\" data-end=\"4120\">Tumor markers for screening: a balanced and personalized approach<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4122\" data-end=\"4429\">Tumor markers for screening are not a universal tool for early detection of cancer in a healthy person. Their role is limited and clearly defined by clinical guidelines.
