When a person takes a test, they usually think about one thing: that the result is accurate. But behind this lies a large invisible system of checks. The quality of laboratory results is not only a good device and professional staff, but also constant monitoring of whether the system is working stably. The CDC emphasizes that quality laboratory testing should provide accurate and timely results, and CLIA directly defines the goal of laboratory standards as ensuring accurate, reliable and timely results for patients.<\/p>\n

This is where automated quality control comes in. Simply put, it is when a laboratory relies on built-in algorithms, software, control materials, and automated rules to perform some of the checks, rather than just manual review, to help identify a failure, deviation, or suspicious result before it is even issued to the patient. The WHO describes quality control as the part of a quality management system that gives the laboratory confidence that the results are accurate and reliable by the time they are issued.<\/p>\n

What does automatic quality control mean in practice?<\/h2>\n

In a modern laboratory, automated quality control of analyses usually involves several levels. The first is internal control at the analytical stage itself: the instrument checks control materials, monitors whether the indicators are within acceptable limits, and can stop or block the output of results if it sees deviations. WHO recommends having an internal control program for quantitative tests and evaluating each test run precisely to confirm the accuracy and reliability of the results.<\/p>\n

The second level is the automatic verification of the results themselves in the laboratory information system or middleware. CLSI defines autoverification as a process in which results are automatically accepted or rejected for further release based on pre-configured rules. In other words, if a result meets all quality criteria, the system can skip it; if not, it goes to manual review by a specialist.<\/p>\n

The third level is continuous monitoring of quality indicators. WHO emphasizes that modern quality improvement in a laboratory is a continuous cycle: the laboratory monitors indicators, analyzes trends, implements corrective actions and checks whether they have worked. That is, automatic control is not a one-time check, but a continuous monitoring of whether the system has started to make mistakes.<\/p>\n

All these elements do not exist in isolation from each other. The WHO and CDC view quality control as part of a broader laboratory management system that includes not only the tests themselves, but also documentation, personnel, equipment, auditing, and continuous improvement.<\/p>\n

Why is this important for the patient?<\/h2>\n

Automatic quality control for the patient analyses<\/a> means something very practical: less risk of a result on the form that cannot be trusted. If the system sees that the device is out of control or that the result does not meet the specified rules, it should not be issued automatically, but rather verified. This is how the likelihood of false or questionable answers that could affect diagnosis or treatment is reduced. The CDC directly links a quality laboratory system to diagnostic accuracy and a reduction in the risk of false, delayed, or missed diagnoses.<\/p>\n

Another advantage is speed. Automation not only catches problems, but also speeds up the delivery of results that meet all criteria. CLSI notes that autoverification optimizes workflow and increases consistency and efficiency, and the CDC also describes autoverification in its materials as a tool for faster delivery of results.<\/p>\n

What automatic control does not replace<\/h2>\n

Despite all the advantages, automated quality control of analyses does not mean that \u201chumans are no longer needed.\u201d On the contrary, it works best when it is configured, tested, and regularly reviewed by specialists. CLSI specifically emphasizes that automated control rules should not just be created, but designed, validated, and adapted to a specific laboratory.<\/p>\n

Also, automatic control does not eliminate external quality assessment. WHO considers external quality assessment and internal control as complementary parts of one system. In other words, the laboratory should not only monitor itself daily, but also periodically confirm its quality through external programs and audits.<\/p>\n

How to understand that a laboratory takes quality seriously<\/h2>\n

The patient does not see all the internal algorithms, but can pay attention to indirect signs. Reliable laboratory<\/a> usually works according to clear procedures, has a quality control system, is not shy about re-checking a questionable result and does not promise \u201cabsolute infallibility\u201d. In a quality system, a suspicious result is not just printed, but goes through an additional verification path. This approach corresponds to the modern logic of laboratory quality, as described by the CDC, WHO and CLIA.<\/p>\n

Automated quality control of analyses is one of those things that the patient hardly notices as long as everything is working well. But it is precisely it that helps to make laboratory diagnostics more stable, predictable and safe.
