For some, it manifests itself easily: itching, rash, red eyes or runny nose. For others, the reaction can be much more serious — with swelling, wheezing and even anaphylaxis. That is why this topic should not be treated as an ordinary discomfort.

Many people think that latex is only used in medical gloves. In fact, it is everywhere: in balloons, condoms, elastic bands, stationery rubber bands, some types of plasters, household gloves, and shoe soles. Because of this, a person sometimes does not understand for years why unpleasant symptoms return again and again.

Allergy, dermatitis or irritation? What's the difference?

Not every reaction to rubber products is a true allergy. People often confuse it with simple irritation or contact dermatitis caused by chemical impurities, talcum powder, or simple friction and sweating of the hands.

To make it easier for you to navigate, let's look at the main differences in the table below.

Comparative table of reactions to latex products

Comparison criterion

Simple irritation (Simple dermatitis)

Allergic contact dermatitis

True latex allergy (Type I)

Cause of occurrence

Friction, moisture under the glove, talcum powder.

Reaction to chemical additives, used in rubber production.

Immune response to natural proteins rubber.

When do symptoms appear?

Gradually, after prolonged or repeated wear.

24–48 hours after contact (delayed reaction).

Instantly or within an hour of contact.

Main manifestations

Dryness, redness, cracks, slight peeling of the skin.

Severe rash, blisters, itching, which may extend beyond the contact area.

Hives, severe itching, swelling, tearing, sneezing, coughing.

Is there a systemic threat (to the whole body)?

No. .Limited to only the skin that has been in direct contact.

Extremely rare. Mostly local manifestation on the skin.

Yes, high. Angioedema, bronchospasm and anaphylactic shock are possible.

What are the most common symptoms and how do they occur?

Symptoms can vary widely. The most common are itchy skin, hives, redness, swelling, watery eyes, itchy eyes, runny nose, sneezing, sore throat, coughing, or wheezing. In severe cases, severe shortness of breath, swelling of the throat, a sharp drop in blood pressure, and a general severe allergic reaction are possible.

It is important to understand that a reaction can occur not only after direct contact. Some people even experience symptoms after inhaling latex particles, such as in a room where powdered latex gloves have been used. This is why sometimes a person says they “didn’t touch anything,” but still had a reaction.

Who is at risk?

Because latex allergy has a cumulative effect (sensitization occurs over time), those who regularly come into contact with this material are at greatest risk:

Medical professionals and dentists: due to daily use of gloves.

Patients who have had multiple surgeries: especially from childhood (e.g. children with spinal hernias/ Spina bifida are at risk of latex allergy to 60-70%).

Beauty and cleaning industry workers: manicurists, hairdressers, cleaners.

People with other allergic diseases: for example, with atopic dermatitis or asthma.

Latex-fruit syndrome: an unexpected connection with food

About 30–50% people who are allergic to latex experience what is called latex-fruit syndrome. The fact is that the molecular structure of some plant proteins is very similar to latex proteins, and our immune system simply confuses them (cross-reaction).

If you have a latex allergy, be careful with the following products:

High risk of reaction: banana, avocado, kiwi, chestnut (edible).

Moderate/Lower Risk: papaya, mango, tomatoes, potatoes, peaches, figs.

If after eating these fruits you experience an itchy mouth, tingling tongue, or swelling of the lips, be sure to inform your allergist.

How is the diagnosis confirmed and what to do next?

Diagnosis does not begin with an analysis, but with a detailed history of reactions. It is important for the doctor to understand what exactly caused the symptoms, how quickly they appear and how severe they are. They may then use skin tests or a blood test for specific antibodies, but the decision on this is made by the allergist.

An important nuance: a negative test does not always completely rule out a latex allergy. That is why not only the laboratory form plays a key role, but also the typical history of reactions.

Action plan for suspected or confirmed allergy:

Complete replacement of materials: Switch to nitrile, vinyl, or polyisoprene gloves and condoms (they should be labeled «"Latex-free"»).

Warn the doctors: When visiting any doctor (especially a dentist, gynecologist, or surgeon), the first thing to do is to inform them: «"I'm allergic to latex"». This will save you from having to use latex gloves and catheters during procedures.

Emergency first aid kit: If your reactions were severe, your doctor will definitely write a prescription for an auto-injector with adrenaline (epinephrine), which you should always carry with you.

When is emergency help needed?

Anaphylaxis develops rapidly. Call an ambulance immediately (103) if you experience the following after contact with latex:

Sudden difficulty breathing, severe coughing, or wheezing.

Swelling of the tongue, lips, feeling of a "lump in the throat" that makes it difficult to swallow.

Sudden dizziness, darkening in the eyes, loss of consciousness (signs of a drop in blood pressure).

Simultaneous appearance of a rash all over the body along with nausea or vomiting.

Latex allergy can look like a small rash, or it can be very serious. It often disguises itself as “glove irritation,” so people don’t always immediately understand what the cause is. If reactions recur, it’s best not to guess, but to undergo a normal diagnosis and then build your life in such a way as to avoid dangerous contacts. The more accurately a person knows their trigger, the easier it is for them to control the situation in everyday life.

Latex allergy is an immune system reaction to proteins found in the sap of the Hevea brasiliensis tree (natural rubber).
