Hepatitis C is considered one of the most dangerous viral infections, as it can be asymptomatic for years and can lead to serious liver damage. A person can be a carrier of the virus and not even suspect it, because the first signs often appear at the stage of cirrhosis or cancer. That is why hepatitis C test<\/strong><\/a> \u2014 an extremely important tool for early detection of the disease, timely treatment, and prevention of complications.<\/p>\n

Testing for HCV (hepatitis C virus) is now available, simple, and recommended not only for people at risk, but also for the general population, especially after the age of 35\u201340.<\/p>\n

What does the hepatitis C test reveal?<\/h3>\n

The purpose of the study is to detect the presence of an infection or a past disease. For this, several types of tests are used, which detect:<\/p>\n

  • \n

    antibodies to the virus (Anti-HCV)<\/strong> \u2014 indicate past contact with the virus or current infection<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Hepatitis C virus RNA (HCV RNA)<\/strong> \u2014 indicates active replication of the virus in the body<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    virus genotype<\/strong> \u2014 helps to choose the most effective therapy<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    viral load level<\/strong> \u2014 estimates the amount of virus in the blood<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The results of each of these tests have separate clinical significance and are analyzed in combination.<\/p>\n

    Main indications for taking the test<\/h3>\n
      \n
    • \n

      past medical procedures associated with the risk of infection (injections, transfusions, surgeries)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      tattooing or piercing under questionable conditions<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      prolonged weakness, pain in the right hypochondrium, decreased appetite<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      unprotected sexual intercourse with an unknown partner<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      participation in donation programs or preparation for pregnancy<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      born before 1993 - during this period, full control of donor blood was not yet established<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      patients with HIV or other chronic infections<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      healthcare workers who have contact with blood<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Benefits of early diagnosis<\/h3>\n

      Early detection of HCV has a number of advantages:<\/p>\n

        the possibility of avoiding liver damage<\/strong> to the stage of fibrosis or cirrhosis<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        high efficiency of modern treatment<\/strong> (up to 98% cases of complete recovery)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        preventing the spread of infection to other people<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        no need for lifelong supervision<\/strong>, if the disease is detected early and treated<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        The longer a person lives with the virus, the higher the risk of irreversible liver damage. Therefore, regular testing is a smart and responsible practice.<\/p>\n

          The procedure is absolutely safe and has no contraindications. It is recommended to undergo it even in the absence of any complaints.<\/p>\n

          What to do after a positive test<\/h3>\n

            Keep calm: Hepatitis C is curable<\/strong> in the vast majority of cases<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          • \n

            Get a PCR test, and then \u2014 assessment of liver condition<\/strong> (elastography or fibrosis tests)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

            Get a consultation from a hepatologist or infectious disease specialist<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

          • \n

            Start therapy (modern antiviral drugs are usually well tolerated)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

            Inform loved ones about the diagnosis, who can also get tested<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
