But when tension becomes chronic, it begins to undermine health. The consequences of stress are not always obvious, but accumulate gradually - and affect almost all body systems.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"482\" data-end=\"530\"><strong data-start=\"485\" data-end=\"530\">How the body responds to stress: the biochemistry of tension<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"532\" data-end=\"794\">In a stressful situation, the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system is activated. They raise blood pressure, speed up the heartbeat, activate the brain and muscles \u2014 all of which prepare the body for &quot;fight or flight.&quot;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"796\" data-end=\"975\">If this activation continues for too long, the body becomes exhausted. Chronically elevated cortisol leads to impaired metabolism, immune system function, sleep, and even memory.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"\" data-start=\"977\" data-end=\"1022\"><strong data-start=\"980\" data-end=\"1022\">Effects of stress on physical health<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1123\"><strong data-start=\"1024\" data-end=\"1054\">1. It is a real biological process that gradually changes the body.
