What is pollen allergy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Pollen allergy is one of the most common types of seasonal allergies, which occurs in response to contact with plant pollen. It is also called hay fever<\/strong> or hay fever<\/strong>. In this case, the immune system perceives the pollen as a danger and triggers a protective reaction - immunoglobulin E (IgE) is produced, which provokes the release of histamine. It is histamine that causes the symptoms familiar to everyone: runny nose, watery eyes, sneezing.<\/p>\n

When does pollen allergy occur?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Pollen allergy has seasonal nature<\/strong>, which depends on the flowering period of different plants:<\/p>\n

  • \n

    Spring (April\u2013May)<\/strong> \u2014 trees: birch, alder, poplar, hazel<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Summer (June\u2013July)<\/strong> \u2014 cereal grasses: timothy, fescue, oats, rye<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  • \n

    Late summer \u2013 autumn (August\u2013October)<\/strong> \u2014 weeds: ragweed, wormwood, quinoa<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Some people are affected by several types of pollen at once, which leads to cross-allergy<\/strong> or a prolonged period of symptoms.<\/p>\n

    Symptoms of pollen allergy<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    Allergic reactions can be mild or severe, and include:<\/p>\n

      Respiratory symptoms<\/strong>: sneezing, nasal congestion, watery discharge, itchy nose<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Eye symptoms<\/strong>: redness, itching, tearing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      Cough, sore throat<\/strong>, sometimes wheezing<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    • \n

      General manifestations<\/strong>: rapid fatigue, irritability, sleep disturbances<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      In severe cases<\/strong> \u2014 bronchospasm, shortness of breath, allergic asthma<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Diagnosis of pollen allergy<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      1. IgE allergy screening<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      A blood test showing the presence of elevated levels of specific antibodies to pollen.<\/p>\n

      2. Skin prick tests<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      They are performed in the off-season. Drops of allergens are applied to the skin and light scratches are made. If redness appears, the allergen has been detected.<\/p>\n

      3. Molecular diagnostics<\/strong><\/h3>\n

      It identifies specific pollen molecules that the body reacts to. This is important in case of cross-reactions (for example, birch pollen - apple).<\/p>\n

      Practical example<\/strong><\/h2>\n

      The patient complains of an annual runny nose and red eyes from April to June. Allergy tests revealed sensitivity to birch, alder, and timothy pollen. Allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT) significantly reduced symptoms in the second year of treatment.<\/p>\n

        After the street - wash your face, hands, hair<\/strong> and change your clothes<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        Use air purifiers with HEPA filters<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        Install in the car cabin filters against pollen<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

      • \n

        Avoid walking in dry and windy weather<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n

        If possible - travel during the flowering period<\/strong> to regions with low pollen concentration<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
