And although ultrasound, mammography and MRI remain the main diagnostic methods, it is tumor markers that open a new level of understanding of the course of the disease. Thanks to laboratory tests, it is possible not only to detect relapses at an early stage, but also to personalize treatment, assess the aggressiveness of the tumor and adapt therapy to the biological characteristics of the body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1123\">These markers are not substitutes for instrumental studies, but they can make the medical picture much more accurate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1381\"><strong data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1156\">Breast cancer markers<\/strong> are substances produced by tumor cells or healthy cells in response to the oncological process. Some of them circulate in the blood, others are studied only in tissue samples. The level of these indicators helps doctors:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1383\" data-end=\"1524\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1383\" data-end=\"1428\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1385\" data-end=\"1428\">determine the probability of a malignant process<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1429\" data-end=\"1463\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1431\" data-end=\"1463\">evaluate the effectiveness of treatment<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1464\" data-end=\"1488\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1466\" data-end=\"1488\">monitor remission<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1489\" data-end=\"1524\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1491\" data-end=\"1524\">predict the course of the disease<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1526\" data-end=\"1591\"><strong data-start=\"1530\" data-end=\"1591\">CA 15-3 is the most common blood marker for breast cancer<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1593\" data-end=\"1949\">This marker is most often used to monitor the course of the disease. It is elevated in women with invasive breast cancer, especially when it has spread to the bones, liver, or lungs. Its levels do not always change in the early stages, so <a href=\"https:\/\/medilab.km.ua\/en\/analysis\/diagnosis-of-tumor-markers\/mammary-gland-oncomarker-sa-15-3\/\">CA 15-3<\/a> is not effective for screening. However, it allows you to assess the dynamics during chemotherapy or hormone therapy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1951\" data-end=\"2124\">It is worth knowing that this marker can also be elevated in some benign conditions, such as mastopathy or hepatitis, so it <strong data-start=\"2074\" data-end=\"2123\">evaluated only in the context of the clinical picture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2126\" data-end=\"2187\"><strong data-start=\"2130\" data-end=\"2187\">CEA is a universal marker that can complement CA 15-3<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2189\" data-end=\"2451\"><a href=\"https:\/\/medilab.km.ua\/en\/analysis\/diagnosis-of-tumor-markers\/rakovo-embryonalnyj-antigen-cea\/\">CEA<\/a> (carcinoembryonic antigen) is nonspecific but may be useful in monitoring tumor progression. Its levels are often elevated in metastatic disease, especially in the lung. It may also be elevated in smokers, even without a tumor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2453\" data-end=\"2564\">The combined determination of CA 15-3 and CEA allows you to increase the sensitivity of monitoring and respond to changes in a timely manner.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2566\" data-end=\"2615\"><strong data-start=\"2570\" data-end=\"2615\">HER2\/neu \u2014 a biomarker for targeted therapy<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2617\" data-end=\"2941\">Unlike the previous ones, HER2 is not examined in the blood, but is determined in the tumor tissue. This is a protein responsible for cell growth. Its overexpression is characteristic of aggressive forms of cancer. If the receptors are positive, hormone therapy is prescribed (tamoxifen, aromatase inhibitors). Determination of ER and PR is mandatory when making a diagnosis, because the prognosis for survival and the risk of recurrence depend on them.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3386\" data-end=\"3448\"><strong data-start=\"3390\" data-end=\"3448\">Ki-67 proliferation index \u2014 an assessment of tumor growth rate<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3450\" data-end=\"3699\">It is a marker of the rate of cell division. High Ki-67 indicates a rapidly growing tumor that requires more aggressive treatment. But in the hands of an experienced oncologist, they become a powerful tool for managing the disease at all stages.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4744\" data-end=\"4919\">Breast tumor markers are not a universal \u201ccancer test\u201d, but they are extremely valuable information for accurate disease management. Their correct interpretation helps not only to diagnose or control the disease, but also to avoid over- or undertreatment.
