The pathologist must confirm the status of a \u00abclean margin\u00bb, which guarantees the absence of residual cancer cells in the kidney and minimizes the risk of local recurrence.<\/p>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"3\"><b data-path-to-node=\"3\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">What does the pathologist evaluate:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul data-path-to-node=\"4\">\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4,0,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"4,0,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Histological subtype of cancer:<\/b> determination of the specific type (clear cell, papillary, chromophobe renal cell carcinoma, or benign oncocytoma).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4,1,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"4,1,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Degree of aggressiveness (Furman\/ISUP Grade):<\/b> an assessment of how different the tumor cells are from normal ones (from G1 to G4).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p data-path-to-node=\"4,2,0\"><b data-path-to-node=\"4,2,0\" data-index-in-node=\"0\">Surgical margin status (R0\/R1):<\/b> Microscopic examination of the incision margin.
