If the glomerular apparatus of the kidneys begins to become damaged, small amounts of albumin can leak into the urine.

Microalbumin testing helps detect such changes at an early stage, when other signs of kidney dysfunction may not yet be present.

When is the test prescribed?

The test may be recommended by a doctor for:

early assessment of kidney damage in diabetes;

monitoring kidney condition in case of arterial hypertension;

risk assessments development or progression of a chronic disease kidneys;

monitoring the condition of patients with kidney diseases;

assessment of treatment effectiveness;

comprehensive examination with other risk factors for kidney damage.

How to take the test

The method of urine collection depends on the prescribed test option - it can be a single urine sample or a daily urine sample.

If necessary, collect daily urine, the first morning portion must be flushed down the toilet. All subsequent portions during the day, night, and the morning portion of the next day are collected in one container.

For example, if the collection started at 6:00, the first portion at 6:00 is not collected, and all subsequent portions are collected until 6:00 the next day inclusive.

Daily urine should be stored at a temperature +4…+8 °C, in a cool place, protected from sunlight.

After collection, all urine must be mixed, identified, and labeled. total daily volume. If required by a specific study, the volume of fluid consumed during the day is also indicated.

What can affect the result?

The level of albumin in the urine may temporarily increase after intense physical exertion, with infections, elevated body temperature, significant increases in blood pressure, and some other conditions.

Therefore, a single abnormal result does not always mean that kidney disease is present. If necessary, your doctor may recommend a repeat test.

Microalbumin and diabetes

In people with diabetes, regular monitoring of albumin in the urine can help detect early signs of kidney damage.

The result is evaluated together with the blood glucose level., kidney function indicators, blood pressure and other data.

Importantly

The result of the analysis must be evaluated comprehensively. You should not independently establish a diagnosis based on the level of microalbumin. The interpretation of the result is carried out by a doctor taking into account symptoms, concomitant diseases and other laboratory indicators.

Microalbumin — a laboratory urine test that measures small amounts of albumin secreted by the kidneys.
