Blood pregnancy test: accuracy, features and practical importance

Many women are familiar with home pregnancy tests that detect the hormone hCG in urine. But there are situations when absolute accuracy is important or you need to know about pregnancy as early as possible. In such cases, doctors recommend blood pregnancy test — a laboratory method that is considered the "gold standard" for early diagnosis.
How the test works
It is based on determining the level human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone begins to be produced after the embryo attaches to the uterine wall. It can be detected in the blood as early as 7–10 days after conception, making the method more sensitive than rapid urine tests, which «notice» hCG only after 10–14 days.
Types of test
Qualitative: determines only the presence of hCG. The result is similar to a pharmacy test ("yes" or "no").
Quantitative (beta-hCG): determines the exact level hormone in the blood. This option allows you to monitor the progress of the pregnancy, track possible risks (for example, ectopic pregnancy), and evaluate the effectiveness of IVF procedures.

Benefits of a blood pregnancy test
Early detection — 3–5 days earlier than a urine test.
Higher sensitivity and reliability.
Ability to monitor hCG levels over time.
Useful in complex clinical situations (suspected miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, IVF).
Possible limitations
Elevated hCG levels do not always indicate pregnancy: they can also increase with certain tumor processes or after the use of hormonal drugs. Also, in very early stages, the hormone level may be too low to be detected, so it is sometimes advised to repeat the analysis.
When should you get a blood test?
If the home test does not yet show a result, but there is a suspicion of pregnancy.
To accurately determine the date of conception.
To assess the development of pregnancy in the first weeks.
With symptoms of ectopic pregnancy.
To confirm pregnancy after in vitro fertilization.
Table of normal hCG levels during pregnancy
| Deadline (weeks) | Approximate hCG levels, mIU/ml | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | 25–300 | Beginning of hormone levels increase |
| 2–3 | 100–5000 | Early pregnancy development |
| 3–4 | 500–10,000 | Clear confirmation of pregnancy |
| 4–5 | 1000–50000 | Active growth of hCG |
| 5–6 | 10000–100000 | Corresponds to the normal course |
| 6–8 | 15,000–200,000 | Peak hormone production |
| 2nd trimester | 10,000–50,000 | Gradual decrease to a stable level |
Values can fluctuate, so you should trust your doctor to interpret the results.
Why a blood pregnancy test is worth considering
For women who want to get an accurate and reliable result in the shortest possible time, this test is the best option. It is used in clinics around the world as a basic method of confirming pregnancy. Unlike home tests, it allows not only to establish the fact of conception, but also to assess how well the pregnancy is developing.
