Is it possible to drink water before tests: recommendations that will help avoid mistakes

Why is this question important?
Even simple preparation for taking the tests is important. Food, exercise, medications, and even plain water can change the results of a laboratory test. Therefore, the question «is it possible to drink water before the tests» is not a formal one. The answer depends on the type of test, the goals of the study, and the patient’s personal characteristics.
General rule
In most cases, it is permissible to drink a little plain water if the test is scheduled on an empty stomach. However, it is important not to exceed a volume of 150–200 ml and not to drink immediately before blood sampling.
Quote from therapist Iryna Shevchuk:
«"Preparing for the analysis is not just about 'not eating anything'. Even large amounts of water can affect the volume of circulating plasma, which changes the results of some indicators."“
Table: Effect of water on different types of analyses
| Type of analysis | Can I drink the water? | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Complete blood count | Yes | A moderate amount of plain water is allowed. |
| Biochemical blood test | Limited | Up to 1 glass, do not drink for at least 30 minutes before delivery |
| Glucose analysis | No | Water can boost metabolism |
| Hormone analysis (TSH, insulin) | Yes | Pure water does not distort the result |
| HIV, hepatitis, PCR analysis | Yes | Does not affect test accuracy |
| Urine analysis | Yes | Allowed if you don't drink immediately before the fence |
| Ultrasound of the abdominal organs | No | The stomach must be empty. |
| Coagulogram | Limited | Water is not forbidden, but not excessively |
| Helicobacter pylori, gastrin tests | No | Strict fasting, even without water |
What could go wrong?
Excessive water consumption before tests can cause a decrease in the concentration of some substances in the plasma. For example, sodium or glucose levels may be low. There are known cases when patients had to retake the test due to inaccuracies caused by the liquid.
Example: The patient drank two large glasses of water before the biochemical blood test. The result showed a slight decrease in total protein and electrolytes. After the retest (with compliance with the conditions), the indicators were within normal limits.
Practical tips
– drink only pure water without gas, sugar and flavorings
– do not exceed the amount: up to 150–200 ml 1–2 hours before sampling
– do not drink immediately before the procedure
– do not use juices, coffee, tea or mineral water instead of water
– if in doubt, check with your doctor or laboratory
Quote from gastroenterologist Irina Kostenko:
«"Testing guidelines may vary depending on the laboratory and type of test. But clean water in moderation is safe in most cases."»
