Allergen test: diagnostic methods, preparation and interpretation of results

What is an allergen test and why take it?
Allergy is one of the most common problems in modern medicine, which occurs due to the hypersensitivity of the immune system to certain substances. Symptoms can range from mild discomfort to serious health threats, such as anaphylactic shock. To determine exactly which substances cause an allergic reaction, allergen testing is used.
Early diagnosis allows not only to identify allergy triggers, but also to develop an effective treatment and prevention plan. This is especially important for people who experience seasonal allergies, allergic reactions to foods, medications, dust, or insect bites.
When to get an allergen test
A doctor may order testing for the following symptoms:
- constant runny nose, nasal congestion, frequent sneezing
- watery, itchy, or red eyes
- rash, itching, or dry skin
- attacks of suffocation, cough, bronchospasms
- swelling of the lips, tongue, face
- nausea, abdominal pain, indigestion after eating certain foods
- chronic fatigue, headache, dizziness
Basic allergen testing methods
Depending on the suspected allergen and the patient's general condition, several diagnostic methods.
Skin tests
This is one of the most accurate and fastest methods of determining allergies. A small amount of allergen is applied to the patient's skin and a micro-scratcher or injection is made. After 15-20 minutes, the reaction is assessed - redness or swelling indicates an allergic response.
The advantage of the method is that it provides quick results, but it is not suitable for people with active allergies or those taking antihistamines.
Blood test for IgE
Determining the level of specific immunoglobulin E class in the blood helps to diagnose sensitivity to various allergens. The method is suitable for people who cannot undergo skin tests, for example, due to severe allergic reactions or chronic skin diseases.
Preparation for the analysis includes donating blood on an empty stomach, avoiding stress and physical exertion on the eve of testing.
Provocative tests
This method is used in medical settings to confirm an allergic reaction. The patient is given a small dose of the allergen through the nose, eyes, or while eating and the reaction is observed. This test is used in cases where other methods have not given a clear answer.
Elimination test
It involves completely eliminating the suspected allergen from your diet or environment for several weeks. If symptoms disappear after this, but then return upon re-exposure, an allergic reaction can be suspected.
How to decipher test results
An immunoglobulin E concentration scale is used for blood analysis.
| IgE level (IU/ml) | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| < 0.35 | No allergic reaction |
| 0.35 – 0.7 | Low sensitivity to allergen |
| 0.7 – 3.5 | Moderate sensitivity |
| 3.5 – 17.5 | High sensitivity |
| > 17.5 | Very severe allergic reaction |
Skin tests are scored based on the degree of redness or swelling at the site of contact with the allergen. The test results should be analyzed by an allergist who will help establish an accurate diagnosis and select treatment.
How to prepare for allergen testing
To obtain accurate results, you must follow several rules:
- Stop taking antihistamines 7-10 days before testing
- avoid physical exertion and emotional stress for 24 hours
- do not consume alcohol and caffeine on the day of the test
- do not eat for 8 hours before taking a blood test
If seasonal allergies are suspected, testing is best done during the off-season, when the level of allergens in the environment is minimal.
What allergy treatments are available after testing?
Depending on the identified allergens, the doctor may suggest the following treatment methods:
- Antihistamines – block the release of histamine, which reduces allergy symptoms
- Corticosteroids – used in cases of severe inflammatory reactions
- Allergen-specific immunotherapy (ASIT) – gradual introduction of the allergen to reduce the body's sensitivity
- Dietary recommendations – for patients with food allergies
Allergen testing is an effective diagnostic method that helps identify triggers of allergic reactions and avoid contact with them. Thanks to modern research methods, it is possible not only to establish an accurate diagnosis, but also to select appropriate therapy that will allow you to control allergy symptoms and improve your quality of life.
