Tryptase is an enzyme found primarily in mast cells and is released when they are activated. A blood test for tryptase is used to assess activation of these cells, particularly in cases of suspected anaphylaxis, and to screen for suspected systemic mast cell disease. The result is evaluated taking into account the time of blood collection, symptoms, and other clinical data.
Tryptase is an enzyme produced by mast cells of the immune system. Its elevation in the blood indicates an active allergic reaction or systemic immune disorders.
Why take the test?
The tryptase test helps:
confirm anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction),

diagnose mast cell activation syndrome,

Up to 11.4 ng/ml — normal level
Above 20 ng/ml — requires additional examinations
The level may increase sharply 1–3 hours after an allergic reaction
