Immunoglobulin E (total IgE)

380 UAH

The test measures the total concentration of immunoglobulin E (IgE) in the blood. These antibodies are involved in immediate-type reactions, including some allergic reactions. The test can be useful in the evaluation of suspected allergies or certain parasitic infections. Elevated total IgE levels alone do not establish the cause of symptoms and are evaluated in conjunction with clinical findings.

Description

Immunoglobulin E (total IgE): what the analysis shows

Total immunoglobulin E (IgE) is a laboratory indicator that helps assess the characteristics of the body's immune response. It is determined in the blood, in particular during examinations for suspected allergic diseases.

IgE is involved in immediate-type reactions. Under certain conditions, the interaction of this antibody with an allergen triggers the release of biologically active substances, including histamine. These can cause a runny nose, sneezing, itching, rash, swelling, and other manifestations of allergies.

When is a total IgE test prescribed?

A doctor may recommend testing if a patient has symptoms that may be related to an allergic reaction, such as:

  • prolonged runny nose, sneezing, or itchy nose;
  • itchy skin, rash, or hives;
  • recurring symptoms of the respiratory system, in particular suspected allergic asthma;
  • the need for a comprehensive examination if an allergic disease is suspected.

Total IgE levels can also vary with some parasitic infections and other conditions, so the result is evaluated taking into account the clinical picture.

What the results mean

Elevated total IgE levels may accompany allergic diseases, but do not confirm allergy by themselves. A normal value also does not exclude an allergic reaction.

This test does not determine the specific substance to which the reaction occurs. To clarify the possible allergen, the doctor may prescribe a determination of specific IgE to individual allergens or other tests.

The result is interpreted taking into account age, symptoms, medical history, and laboratory reference values. Total IgE levels alone cannot reliably determine the severity of an allergy or predict the strength of a future reaction.

How research is conducted

A blood sample is tested to determine total IgE. The indications for the test and the need for preparation depend on the clinical situation and laboratory regulations.

The total IgE test is one of the diagnostic tools that can be used in conjunction with symptoms and other test results to determine the next steps.
