Infection panel/Cytomegalovirus infection
Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a member of the herpesvirus family that can cause serious infectious diseases in humans. This viral infection is quite common and can occur at any age, although it is most often detected in children and people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV or after organ transplantation. One of the important components of the diagnosis of cytomegalovirus infection is the determination of the IgG antibody avidity index.
IgG is a class of antibodies that are produced in the body during infection. The IgG antibody avidity index is a measure of how strongly the antibodies interact with the virus and how effectively they can control the infection.
Cytomegalovirus infection can be asymptomatic in many people, but it can be particularly dangerous for newborns, pregnant women, and immunocompromised individuals. Therefore, it is important to promptly determine the extent of CMV infection and the state of the immune response.
To diagnose cytomegalovirus infection, a special infection panel is performed, which includes determining IgG levels and other indicators. The main components of this panel are:
- Determination of IgG antibody levels to CMV: This indicates whether a person has been exposed to the virus in the past. Elevated IgG levels indicate immunity to CMV, although they do not indicate active infection.
- IgG antibody avidity index: This index is determined to determine the strength of the interaction of antibodies with the virus. It can be useful in determining the activity of the infection. The avidity index is higher in cases where the antibodies have a strong interaction with the virus.
- Polymerase chain reaction (PCR): PCR can detect the presence of active CMV infection in tissues and biological fluids.
- Clinical symptoms: Assessing symptoms of infection, such as fever, eye inflammation, enlarged lymph nodes, and others.
The results of the infection panel help doctors understand the state of the body's immune response to cytomegalovirus and determine the appropriate treatment strategy. In the case of active infection, antiviral therapy may be prescribed.
It is important to remember that cytomegalovirus infection can be particularly dangerous for certain population groups, so regular screenings and early diagnosis are essential to prevent complications.
All these measures are aimed at preventing the development of serious complications and ensuring proper patient care.
