Infectious Disease Panel/Lyme Disease (Borreliosis)
Lyme disease is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi sl, transmitted by ticks of the genus Ixodes. This disease can affect the skin, nervous system, cardiovascular system, and other organs and systems of the body.
Immunoglobulin G (IgG) is one of the classes of antibodies produced by the body in response to an infectious agent, such as the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi sl. IgG antibodies help the body fight pathogens and provide immunity against repeated infections.
The main symptoms of borreliosis can appear several days, weeks, or even months after a tick bite. The first indicator of infection may be a red spot at the site of the bite, which resembles a sac. This erythematous spot is formed quite rarely and can be large, up to 5 cm in diameter. It is not painful, does not itch, and does not cause discomfort. It may disappear on its own in a few days or weeks, but without treatment, borreliosis can develop further.
If left untreated, the disease can affect the nervous system, heart, and other organs. In this case, the following symptoms may appear:
- Neurological manifestations: headache, migraine, dizziness, muscle weakness, facial paralysis, pain in the neck, back and joints, disorientation and impaired coordination of movements.
- Cardiological manifestations: arrhythmias, inflammation of the muscular membrane of the heart (myocarditis), impaired conduction of cardiac impulses.
- Arthritic manifestations: pain and swelling of the joints, particularly the knees and ankles.
- Skin manifestations: the appearance of a blistering rash, red spots on the body.
Various methods are used to diagnose Lyme disease, including blood tests for IgG antibodies and other immunological markers. Immunological antibody tests can detect elevated levels of IgG in the blood, indicating active or past infection.
Treatment for Lyme disease involves the administration of antibiotics, such as doxycycline or amoxicillin, for a period of time, depending on the stage of the disease and its manifestations. It is important to start treatment as early as possible to avoid the development of complications and chronic forms of the disease.
Prevention of Lyme disease is to avoid contact with ticks. It is necessary to avoid tall grassy areas where ticks are common, or when going to such areas, wear protective clothing, use repellents, and check the body for ticks after a walk.
If you suspect borreliosis or experience symptoms similar to those described above, you should immediately consult a doctor for qualified help and timely treatment.
