Pathomorphological study of cystic formations — is a histological analysis of the walls and contents of cavity formations (cysts) localized in the tissues of the testicle, its appendix or membranes. Code PG051 provides for a comprehensive study of the material obtained during surgical removal of the cyst (cystectomy) to establish its exact type and exclude hidden tumor processes.

Research objective: The main task is to morphologically verify the cyst. Although most such formations are benign (for example, spermatocele), some cystic structures may be a manifestation of more complex pathologies, including specific infections or rare forms of cystic tumors. The study allows the doctor to make sure that there are no atypical cells in the cyst wall.

What does the pathologist evaluate:

  • Inner lining type: Analysis of the epithelium lining the cyst (ciliated, cuboidal, or squamous) to distinguish a spermatocele from a simple appendiceal cyst.

  • Cyst contents (if tissue elements are present): searching for sperm, cell debris, or crystals.

  • Wall structure: assessment of the thickness of the fibrous capsule and the presence of muscle fibers or vessels within it.

  • Inflammatory changes: detection of signs of chronic inflammation or granulomatous reactions in surrounding tissues.

  • Exclusion of malignancy: checking the cyst wall for epithelial proliferation or foci of atypia.

Clinical significance: For the urologist, the result with the code PG051 is the final confirmation of the diagnosis. If the study confirms the benign nature of the formation (for example, a common retention cyst), the patient is considered cured after surgery. If signs of inflammation caused by infection are detected, an additional course of antibacterial therapy may be prescribed to prevent relapses or epididymitis.

When is it prescribed:

  • after removal of an epididymal cyst (spermatocele);

  • removal of spermatic cord cysts;

  • detection of complex cysts (with septa or parietal component) according to ultrasound data;

  • the presence of a painful or rapidly growing cystic formation in the scrotum;

  • Differential diagnosis of cystic forms of testicular tumors.
