What does an iron blood test show?

Iron blood test determines the level of this trace element in blood serum, which allows you to assess:

  • total iron stores in the body

  • efficiency of iron transport in the blood

  • potential iron deficiency or excess

  • likelihood of anemia or chronic metabolic disorders

This test is not a stand-alone procedure - it is usually combined with the determination of ferritin, transferrin, TBC (total serum iron binding capacity).

When is the best time to donate blood for iron?

How to prepare: instructions

3 days before delivery

  • Avoid iron preparations and vitamin C supplements

  • Do not change your diet abruptly (do not eat a lot of meat just the day before the test)

In 24 hours

  • Do not drink alcohol.

  • Reduce physical and emotional stress

  • Don't smoke, or at least abstain for 3 hours before the test

On the morning of the delivery day

  • Don't drink coffee, tea or juices - only water

  • Don't eat breakfast.

  • Before submission, it is advisable sit quietly for 10–15 minutes

  • Blood is taken from a vein.
