Iron blood test: how, when and why to take it

What does an iron blood test show?
Iron blood test determines the level of this trace element in blood serum, which allows you to assess:
total iron stores in the body
efficiency of iron transport in the blood
potential iron deficiency or excess
likelihood of anemia or chronic metabolic disorders
This test is not a stand-alone procedure - it is usually combined with the determination of ferritin, transferrin, TBC (total serum iron binding capacity).
Who is this analysis for?
Patients with suspected iron deficiency anemia
For women with heavy menstruation or during pregnancy
For people with symptoms: hair loss, brittle nails, pallor, weakness
For persons with dietary restrictions (vegetarians, vegans)

When is the best time to donate blood for iron?
In the morning — ideally by 10:00
On an empty stomach — after an overnight fast of at least 8 hours
If you are taking iron supplements — It is advisable to take the test before the appointment.

How to prepare: instructions
3 days before delivery
Avoid iron preparations and vitamin C supplements
Do not change your diet abruptly (do not eat a lot of meat just the day before the test)
In 24 hours
Do not drink alcohol.
Reduce physical and emotional stress
Don't smoke, or at least abstain for 3 hours before the test
On the morning of the delivery day
Don't drink coffee, tea or juices - only water
Don't eat breakfast.
Before submission, it is advisable sit quietly for 10–15 minutes
How the analysis itself takes place
Blood is taken from a vein.
The fence lasts no more than 3–5 minutes
Results are usually available within 1 business day

The interpretation of the results must be done by a doctor, taking into account all clinical data.
How often should this test be taken?
Preventively - once a year
During the treatment of anemia - as prescribed by a doctor (sometimes monthly)
Before and during pregnancy - 1–2 times per trimester
A blood test for iron is a simple but very indicative diagnostic method. It allows you to detect disorders even before severe symptoms appear.
