Blood glucose test: the main source of energy and preparation rules

Glucose is a key component of the blood, responsible for carbohydrate metabolism and serving as the main universal source of energy for most cells of the body, especially for brain tissue and the nervous system. Most of the energy that our body uses is formed precisely due to the oxidation of glucose. It enters the cells with food, ensuring stable metabolic processes.
The concentration of this substance in the body is clearly regulated by the hormonal system. A stable level of the substance in the blood is maintained mainly due to the coordinated mechanism of "glucose-insulin-glucagon".
| Hormone / Group of hormones | Effect on glucose levels | Mechanism of action |
|---|---|---|
| Insulin | ⬇️ Lowers the level | Master controller; stimulates the formation of glycogen and triglycerides, moves glucose into cells. |
| Counterresponsible hormones (Glucagon, cortisol, adrenaline, somatotropin) | ⬆️ Level up | Stimulates the release of glucose reserves into the blood to provide the body with emergency energy. |
| Thyroid hormones (Thyrotropin, T3, T4) | ⬆️ Level up | Activates overall metabolism and accelerates carbohydrate absorption. |
Laboratory testing is primarily used to diagnose, monitor, and control the effectiveness of treatment for carbohydrate metabolism disorders (including diabetes mellitus).
How to properly prepare for the study
To obtain the most accurate and correct results, blood sampling is carried out after following several important rules:
- Stable diet: Do not change your usual diet for 24 hours before your visit to the laboratory.
- Limit sweets: Avoid excessive sweets and desserts the night before.
- Hungry period: Take the test strictly on an empty stomach (in the morning, after 8–12 hours of fasting). You can drink clean, still water without impurities in the usual amount.
- Medication reconciliation: If possible and after mandatory consultation with a doctor, refrain from taking medications on the eve of blood sampling.
- Rest: Avoid heavy physical exertion, training, and psycho-emotional stress before testing.
📍 Importantly: This information is for reference only. Please consult your doctor for interpretation of results, accurate diagnosis, and treatment regimen.
