What is hogweed, how is it dangerous and why do you need to get tested after contact?

Hogweed is a plant that has become a real environmental problem in Ukraine in recent years. Infecting fields, roadsides, and homestead plots, hogweed not only threatens nature, but also poses a real danger to human health.
Some types of hogweed, in particular Sosnovsky's hogweed, contain furanocoumarins, substances that cause severe photochemical skin burns. Contact with this plant is especially dangerous in the summer, when the toxic compounds are activated by sunlight.
If you have had contact with hogweed, do not delay. It is important not only to provide first aid, but also to take appropriate tests to monitor the condition of the body. More information about possible examinations is available on the laboratory website:

What is hogweed and why is it dangerous?
Hogweed is a perennial plant of the umbelliferae family, which, due to its aggressive nature, occupies vast territories. The main danger to humans is Sosnowski's hogweed (Heracleum sosnowskyi). Its juice contains a high concentration of furanocoumarins - substances that are activated by ultraviolet light and cause:
severe chemical burns
allergic reactions
photodermatitis
intoxication of the body
Upon contact with hogweed juice, a person may develop severe inflammatory processes that require immediate medical intervention.
How does the lesion occur?
After hogweed juice comes into contact with the skin, a photochemical reaction occurs under the influence of sunlight. This can lead to the following consequences:
| Stage | Symptoms |
|---|---|
| 1–2 hours after contact | Redness, itching |
| After 12–24 hours | Blisters, swelling, burning |
| In 2–3 days | Ulcers, wounds, fever |
| In 1–2 weeks | Scar formation, skin pigmentation |
Why you need to get tested after exposure
| Reason | Why is this needed? |
|---|---|
| Controlling inflammation levels | Determination of C-reactive protein level, complete blood count |
| Assessment of allergic reaction | Immunoglobulin E analysis, allergen testing |
| Monitoring infectious complications | Complete blood count, procalcitonin |
| Checking the condition of the liver and kidneys | Biochemical analyses |
| Control of the immune response | Immunograms and allergy tests |
Tests help to identify the risks of developing systemic reactions in a timely manner, especially if symptoms persist or worsen.
What tests are recommended after contact with hogweed?
| Analysis | What allows you to detect |
|---|---|
| Complete blood count | Signs of inflammation, infection |
| C-reactive protein | Degree of systemic inflammation |
| Immunoglobulin E | Allergic reactions |
| Blood biochemistry | Liver, kidney condition, electrolyte balance |
| Allergy tests | Sensitivity to furanocoumarins |
| Procalcitonin test | Risk of bacterial infection |
What to do immediately after contact
Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water.
Avoid sunlight for 48–72 hours
Do not cover the skin with an airtight bandage.
See a doctor if blisters or inflammation appear.
Take recommended tests to monitor your condition
When to see a doctor immediately
The appearance of large blisters or ulcers
Signs of intoxication (nausea, headache, fever)
Injuries to large areas of skin
Complications of an allergic reaction (facial swelling, difficulty breathing)
What complications can occur without proper control?
| Complication | What is dangerous? |
|---|---|
| Deep skin injuries | Scar formation, prolonged healing |
| Wound infection | Purulent lesions, sepsis |
| Allergic shock | Life-threatening condition |
| Liver dysfunction | Toxic organ damage |
| Systemic intoxication | General poisoning of the body |
Hogweed is not just a weed, but a real health hazard. Its effects on the body are not limited to skin burns. Contact with the plant can lead to serious consequences, especially without timely diagnosis and control.
After any contact with hogweed, it is important not only to treat the skin, but also to take the necessary tests to monitor inflammatory and allergic processes in the body.
Specialists Medilab Plus will help you conduct an examination, provide recommendations, and identify risks in a timely manner.
