Probiotic supplements: why you need them and how to choose the right ones

What are probiotics?
Probiotics — are live microorganisms (mostly bacteria and yeasts) that, when consumed in sufficient amounts, confer health benefits. Probiotics are most commonly used for maintaining balance gut microbiota — that is, the good bacteria that live in our digestive tract.
Probiotics come in a variety of forms: capsules, powders, liquid concentrates, and yogurts with live cultures. The most popular genera of beneficial bacteria are: Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Saccharomyces (yeast).
When are probiotic supplements recommended?
Probiotics can be part of both treatment, and so on prevention. Their use is especially effective in the following cases:
after antibiotic therapy (to prevent diarrhea and dysbiosis)
at irritable bowel syndrome
at functional digestive disorders
at food intoxications and poisonings
in patients with food allergy
for increasing immunity
at high stress levels, which affects digestion
in children with atopic dermatitis or colic
How probiotics work
Probiotics don't just "populate" the intestines, but interact with its environment:
compete with pathogens for "place of residence"“
produce substances (bacteriocins, acids) that inhibit harmful microflora
stimulate immunity intestines
strengthen the mucous membrane intestines
regulate peristalsis
reduce inflammation in the intestinal wall

The most common strains of probiotics
| Strain | Main action |
|---|---|
| Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG | Reduces antibiotic-associated diarrhea |
| Lactobacillus acidophilus | Improves digestion, normalizes microflora |
| Bifidobacterium longum | Supports immunity, recommended for children |
| Bifidobacterium bifidum | Improves vitamin absorption, reduces inflammation |
| Saccharomyces boulardii | Effective for traveler's diarrhea, antibiotics |
Example:
The patient takes amoxicillin for 10 days and begins to experience abdominal discomfort, flatulence, and diarrhea. After the introduction of a course of probiotics with Saccharomyces boulardii symptoms disappear quickly.
How to choose a probiotic supplement
Purpose of use: Some strains work better for diarrhea, others for constipation, and still others for immunity.
Number of colony forming units (CFU): should be at least 1 billion CFU/dose.
Resistance to stomach acid: It is important that the bacteria reach the intestines alive.
Release form: Capsules are the safest, powders are convenient for children.
Availability prebiotics (synbiotics): some foods contain fiber that “feeds” probiotics (e.g., inulin, FOS).
Expiration date and storage conditions: Living bacteria have a limited lifespan.
Probiotics: benefit or fad?
Despite the marketing hype, the effectiveness of probiotics has been confirmed by numerous studies. For example:
According to Mayo Clinic, the use of probiotics reduces the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea in 42–60%
According to FDA, probiotics can help treat irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
WHO recognizes probiotics as part of support general immunity and recovery from infections
When probiotics can be dangerous
in case of immunodeficiency (cancer, HIV) - you should consult a doctor
in acute conditions (sepsis, pancreatitis)
not recommended to use at the same time as hot drinks or alcohol
self-medication in children — only as prescribed by a pediatrician
Probiotic supplements are not a panacea, but they are an important tool for maintaining health, especially during times of stress, taking antibiotics, or with chronic digestive disorders. The right probiotic can not only improve your well-being, but also strengthen the body's defenses.
