Blood test for CA-72-4: a marker for monitoring cancer diseases

General characteristics of the marker CA-72-4
CA-72-4 (Cancer Antigen 72-4) is a tumor-associated glycoprotein, specifically tumor-associated glycoprotein 72 (TAG-72), which belongs to the mucin-like proteins. Normally, it practically does not circulate in the blood, but its expression increases significantly in a number of malignant processes, especially in the case of adenocarcinomas of the gastrointestinal tract and ovaries.
Who and when is this test prescribed?
The CA-72-4 test is usually prescribed for:
Patients with suspected stomach, colon, ovarian cancer.
After the diagnosis is made - for monitoring the effectiveness of chemotherapy or surgical treatment.
For timely detection of relapse in patients with already diagnosed oncological pathology.
Less often - as part of an extended examination with nonspecific gastroenterological symptoms.
Preparation for analysis
Pick-up time: The analysis is performed on an empty stomach, preferably in the morning.
Avoid: It is recommended to refrain from alcohol, fatty foods, and intense physical activity 24 hours before the test.
Medications: Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, as some of them may affect the test results.
Normal values and interpretation of results
| CA-72-4 level (IU/ml) | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 0 – 6.9 | Norm |
| > 6.9 | Possible increase, requires additional examination |
Note: Elevated levels of CA-72-4 do not always indicate the presence of a malignant process. It can be elevated in some benign conditions, such as inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, or ovaries.
Advantages and limitations of the analysis
Advantages:
High specificity for some types of cancer, especially stomach and ovarian.
Ability to monitor treatment effectiveness and detect relapses.
Limitation:
Low sensitivity in early stages of the disease.
False-positive results are possible for some benign conditions.

Combination with other tumor markers
To increase diagnostic accuracy, the CA-72-4 test is often combined with other tumor markers:
CA-72-4 + CEA: For the diagnosis and monitoring of stomach and colon cancer.
CA-72-4 + CA-125: For the detection and monitoring of ovarian cancer.
CA-72-4 + CA-19-9: For the diagnosis of pancreatic and biliary tract tumors.
Recommendations for patients
Don't panic if the reading is above normal. This is just an indicator that needs confirmation.
Regularity: Patients with stomach cancer are recommended to undergo testing every 3–6 months after treatment.
Discuss the results only with an oncologist or gastroenterologist, do not interpret them yourself.
