Human metapneumovirus (BC-hMPV) is one of the main causes of respiratory infections, especially in children, the elderly, and people with reduced immunity. This virus belongs to the Paramyxoviridae family and often causes symptoms similar to the flu or cold. Qualitative detection of metapneumovirus using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) allows accurate detection of the virus even in the early stages of the disease.

What is metapneumovirus (BC-hMPV)?

Metapneumovirus was first identified in 2001, although it had been circulating among humans for a long time before that. The virus is spread by airborne droplets and causes acute respiratory illness. It most often affects the upper and lower respiratory tract, causing bronchitis, laryngitis, pneumonia, and other complications.

Main symptoms of metapneumovirus infection

Symptoms of infection may vary depending on age, immune status, and the presence of comorbidities. The main manifestations include:

  1. Fever – increase in body temperature to 38–39°C.
  2. Cough – initially dry, then transitioning to wet.
  3. Runny nose and nasal congestion.
  4. Sore throat and hoarseness.
  5. Shortness of breath and wheezing – especially in children and people with chronic lung diseases.
  6. General weakness, headache, and muscle pain.

In young children, the infection can lead to bronchiolitis, while adults more often have a milder course of the disease.

Why perform PCR-qualitative determination?

Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a modern diagnostic method that allows you to detect the genetic material of the virus in samples of mucus from the nasopharynx. The main advantages of this method are:

  1. High accuracy. PCR allows you to detect even a small amount of the virus.
  2. Speed of obtaining results. The analysis can be obtained within 24–48 hours.
  3. Early diagnosis. The test detects the virus even before obvious symptoms appear.
  4. No influence of other infections. The test does not react to other respiratory viruses, which ensures its specificity.

How to prepare for the analysis?

To conduct a quality analysis, you must follow a few simple rules:

  1. Do not eat, drink or brush your teeth within 2–3 hours before sampling.
  2. Avoid using nasal sprays and inhalations before the test.
  3. Notify the doctor about taking any antiviral drugs.

Interpretation of results

There are two types of PCR test results for metapneumovirus:

ResultDescriptionNext steps
PositiveGenetic material of metapneumovirus has been detected.Doctor's consultation, treatment prescription.
NegativeNo virus detected.Further diagnosis if symptoms persist.

Treatment and prevention

There is currently no specific antiviral treatment for metapneumovirus. Treatment is aimed at relieving symptoms:

  1. Antipyretics: paracetamol, ibuprofen.
  2. Mucolytics and expectorants to relieve cough.
  3. Moisturizing the nasal mucosa using salt solutions.
  4. Sufficient fluid intake to prevent dehydration.

For prevention, it is recommended:

  1. Wash your hands regularly with soap.
  2. Avoid contact with sick people.
  3. Maintain a healthy lifestyle and strengthen immunity.

Where to take the test in Khmelnytskyi?

Qualitative determination of metapneumovirus (BC-hMPV) by PCR is available in the laboratory Medilab. Modern equipment, experienced staff, and quick results allow for timely diagnosis of the infection and initiation of necessary treatment.
