Histological material is taken only in medical institutions.
Histological examination after removal of a Bartholin's gland cyst — is an analysis of the tissues of the cyst shell or the gland itself, performed after surgical intervention. The study allows you to verify the diagnosis, exclude tumor processes and confirm the benignity of the formation localized in the vestibule of the vagina.
Research objective: The analysis aims to examine the cyst wall in detail to determine its type and rule out rare but dangerous conditions such as Bartholin gland adenocarcinoma. Histology is a mandatory standard after any removal of neoplasms to ensure the patient's final recovery.
What does the pathologist evaluate:
The structure of the cyst wall: determining the type of epithelium (cylindrical, transitional, or squamous) lining the cavity.
Signs of inflammation: detection of chronic bartholinitis, tissue infiltration by leukocytes, or the presence of a purulent process.
Cellular composition: checking for the presence of atypical cells or signs of proliferation, which may indicate a neoplastic process.
Gland tissue: assessment of the functional state of the gland itself, if it was removed along with the cyst.
Clinical significance: The results of the analysis allow the gynecologist to establish a final diagnosis and understand the cause of the cyst (ductal obstruction, chronic inflammation, etc.). This is important for preventing recurrences and determining the tactics of further rehabilitation.
When is it prescribed:
after surgery to remove a Bartholin's gland cyst (extirpation);
with frequent relapses of the disease;
if the cyst has an atypical dense structure or is growing rapidly;
over 40 years of age (to exclude cancer risks typical of this age group).
